A man was shocked to find his wife raped by a 19-year-old boy in their own bridal boutique in Park Rinching, Kajang near here today.

Incident occurred at about 11:30 am when the victim's husband said the new entrants to the bridal boutique after opening the door was locked from inside by the suspect.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 6 — A senior Umno minister has declared that he would fight tooth and nail to ensure Chinese representation in a Barisan Nasional (BN) government even if the MCA or Gerakan fails to secure a single parliamentary seat in the coming polls.

Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Aziz told The Malaysian Insider that BN would not “punish” the Chinese voters by simply yanking their representatives from Cabinet posts if they refused to vote for the two Chinese-centric component parties.
While admitting that the matter would not be his to decide, the minister in the Prime Minister’s Department gave his word that he would champion this cause to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak should such a situation arise when the coalition retains the government.

“I want to tell the Chinese voters that BN is a multi-racial government and regardless of the outcome of the elections, we will always have a Chinese representative in Cabinet. I want to say this with certainty even though I am a nobody in Umno... not even a vice-president.

“But if it should come to that, I will do my very best to persuade the PM that we should not have a single communal government. The system allows us to appoint senators and we need to have representatives of the non-Malay community,” he said.

Nazri recalled that such a promise was made by the country’s longest-serving prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad during his tenure in government.

“I remember back when Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was PM... he told Cabinet that even if we come to a stage where MCA or Gerakan loses in all parliamentary seats, we cannot form a Malay government.

“We cannot be a single communal government as it simple goes against the spirit and policy of BN. We cannot punish and penalise a section of the community just because they do not support BN,” he said.

Nazri was recalling a pledge made by MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek several months ago when the former Cabinet minister said he would pull his party from the government if it performs worse than it did in Election 2008.

(The Malaysian Insider) - KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 6 — Selangor’s religious authorities have clamped down on the state’s PAS leadership, charging deputy commissioner Khalid Samad over giving a sermon without permission and revoking state chief Rani Othman’s religious credentials.

According to Harakahdaily, Khalid was summoned to the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) today and notified of the charge in relation to a sermon he gave in Klang during the recent fasting month.

The PAS party organ also said that Rani, whose credentials expired during Ramadan, had his renewal application rejected.

“I received the credentials last year and applied to extend them but I received a letter from Jais informing me that my application has been rejected and my credentials revoked,” the Meru assemblyman said of the license which allows a Muslim scholar to give sermons without prior permission.

Khalid was charge under Section 119 of the Selangor Islamic Religious Administration Enactment for giving a sermon in a surau at Taman Seri Sementa, Kapar in Klang on August 16 without prior permission.

The Shah Alam MP will face trial on November 24 in the Klang Syariah court.

He told Harakahdaily today that the sermon had touched on the role of Muslims in the religious affairs of the state.

Malaysians mark independence in shadow of ethnic distrust

As Malaysians mark the 54th anniversary of their independence, the usual pomp and pageantry comes at a time of increasingly tense ethnic and religious relations.

Malaysia prides itself on its thriving multicultural society and the freedom of religion against the backdrop of a majority-Muslim population, but racial tensions have always simmered under the peaceful surface of this relatively prosperous South-East Asian nation.

Ethnic Malays, who are almost all Muslims, make up about two-thirds of the population, while ethnic Chinese and Indians who are largely Christians, Buddhists and Hindus, constitute a large minority.

A survey conducted by independent polling group Merdeka Center this year revealed that the number of Malaysians who felt that ethnic relations were good had dropped to 66 per cent, from 78 per cent five years ago.

The poll also showed a particularly high level of distrust among Malaysians of different ethnic backgrounds.

'In our view, the survey findings reflect a significant shift in Malaysian public thinking - the optimism of the mid-2000s appears to have given way to increased insecurities and distrust, which is in part due to the current competitive political environment,' the centre said this month after its survey results were announced.

Race and religion have always been sensitive issues here, but interracial clashes in recent years have exacerbated the growing ethnic divide and non-Muslims increasingly complain of having their rights trampled on by a majority-Muslim government.

Last year, the Home Ministry appealed against a High Court decision to allow non-Muslims to use the word Allah to mean God, a ruling that had riled most Muslims.

The case led to at least eight churches being attacked, including one in the capital Kuala Lumpur city which was firebombed.

No casualties were reported in any of the attacks, but many observers noted that the incident brought to light the fragile and tense relationships within multi-religious Malaysia.

Despite Prime Minister Najib Razak's stated commitment to closing the racial divide since he took office in 2009, Malaysia's political, education and economic structures continue to be deeply entrenched along racial and religious lines.

Since its independence from Britain in 1957, Malaysia has been ruled by the National Front, a coalition of 14 race-based parties, all claiming to represent and fight for the cause of specific ethnic groups.

Adding to the constant reminder of ethnic division is the decades-old affirmative action plan, the New Economic Policy, which favours Malays.

The worrying level of ethnic tensions of late has been blamed largely on irresponsible politicians playing the race card.

Government policies on almost every area - from education to economic and electoral reform - continue to be 'articulated from an ethnic framework, rather than seeking to find commonalities,' said Denison Jayasooria, a lead researcher in ethnic studies in the National University of Malaysia.

'This articulation and the attempt to champion ethnic policies has had an impact on contemporary Malaysian society,' Denison said.

A poll conducted by the Merdeka Center in August also revealed that Najib's popularity has suffered, with his approval rating dropping 6 percentage points over a period of three months from May.

While the rising cost of living and continued concerns of a high crime rate were some of the major reasons for the drop, observers noted that Najib's handling of racial and religious issues in recent times may have also contributed to his lagging support.

His '1Malaysia' campaign, which aims to break down racial divisions and create a single, unifying Malaysian identity, has been criticised as hypocritical vote-grabbing after his ruling coalition suffered badly in the 2008 general elections.

'I don't believe in Najib's 1Malaysia. It's just lip service,' said Maria Hasan, an ethnic Malay Muslim journalist.

'The reality on the ground is that there is an increasingly wide racial divide,' she said.

Denison said that while Najib had put in place positive reform policies, he continued to 'remain silent' in addressing racially tinged statements coming from members of his ruling United Malays National Organisation.

But despite the grim outlook for ethnic and religious harmony, Denison said he remains hopeful that the growing number of moderate Malaysians would respond rationally to sensitive situations.

'In the long run, Malaysians will reject extremism of all kinds,' he said.

'The Malaysian spirit ... will draw us towards balance.'

Kuala Lumpur: The Consumer Association of Penang state has complained that Tamil and Hindi movies screened in Malaysian theatres showed "violent and steamy scenes" although the films were vetted by the censorship board, a media report said Monday.

The association's education officer N.V. Subbarow expressed doubts if the board had carried out its job thoroughly, suggesting that some of the committee members "could be unsure of their responsibilities", Tamil language daily Malaysia Nanban reported.

"It is a fact that some Tamil and Hindi movies had given rise to many social problems among the younger generation in the country," he said, commenting on board secretary S.Thanasegaran's statement that the committee was very strict in editing violent and steamy scenes in films.

Subbarow said he is surprised that there are 11 members in the committee but still there are films shown in theatres with violent and vulgar scenes.

He suggested the censor board should have standard guidelines on violent and vulgar scenes so that all the members are aware of their roles and uniformity is ensured.

Tamil language films, as also Hindi films and their actors, are popular in Malaysia that is home to 2.1 million ethnic Indians.

Kuala Terengganu (The Star/ANN) - Mohd Ashraf Hafiz Abdul Aziz, 25, has died - and so has Aleesha Farhana, the woman he wanted to be.
Doctors at the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital, where the deceased was admitted on Friday after a heart problem and low blood pressure, said the patient was suffering from unstable angina with cardiogenic shock. The patient died at 4.55am Saturday.
The deceased had failed in a bid to carry a woman¿s name in the identity card after undergoing a sex change in Thailand two years ago.
The family, adhering to a High Court ruling, buried the deceased as a man at the Kampung Seberang Takir Muslim cemetery at 4.30pm.
Mohd Ashraf stirred the nation when the court rejected an application on July 18 to change his gender and name to Aleesha Farhana Abdul Aziz.
Judge Datuk Mohd Yazid Mustafa ruled there was no legal statute to grant the application based solely on a sex-change operation.
He said a person¿s gender was determined at birth and could not be changed through surgery.
Mohd Ashraf¿s father Abdul Aziz Ahmad, 60, said: ¿All close family members were at his side up to the last moments of his life. It is a big loss to us."
Mohd Ashraf¿s mother, who only wished to be known as Kak Yah, 51, said her transsexual son had placed an order for a baju kurung Pahang and had been excited about wearing it for Hari Raya.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (News Today) - A prominent Malaysian official Thursday encouraged young Muslim teenagers to get married if they cannot resist having sex and promised money to help them start a family — a stance that drew criticism from women’s rights activists. Mohamad Ali Rustam, chief minister of southern Malacca state, said the moves could help reduce a growing problem of babies being abandoned by girls who have unwanted pregnancies.

Muslims are permitted to marry after reaching puberty in Malaysia, as long as they obtain consent from their parents and Islamic Shariah courts. Nearly two-thirds of Malaysia’s 28 million people are Muslim.

For non-Muslim Malaysians, however, girls must be at least 16 and boys 18 to marry. Underage marriages are not common, and authorities have voiced
concern that unmarried teenagers are having sex, sometimes resulting in young mothers killing or abandoning their babies.

Encouraging teenagers to marry could be “a good way to solve the problem” of babies being dumped, Mohamad Ali said. “These people, you can’t just stop them from having sex,” Mohamad Ali told The Associated Press. “Muslim girls also want to enjoy (sex).”

Officials in Malacca plan to start providing 500 ringgit ($160) in financial help to young couples who want to get married. They are also considering building a special school for girls who become pregnant, since regular schools would expel them, Mohamad Ali said.

So far this year, Malacca authorities have recorded 174 babies born out of wedlock, he said. Fourteen were to girls under age 16 and 60 to girls between 16 and 20. Three babies were found abandoned. Similar problems have been reported in other Malaysian states.

Mohamad Ali said Muslim girls who have sex out of wedlock also risk being thrown out of their homes by their parents, with some becoming prostitutes to make a living. Women’s rights activists criticized Mohamad Ali’s views, which he first expressed to Malaysian media earlier this week.

“It’s a regressive move. ... We all know that child marriages are an aberration,” said Ivy Josiah, executive director of the Women’s Aid Organization, a private group. Laws that allow marriage below the age of 18 should be scrapped because they might encourage pedophilia and undermine the physical and emotional health of teenagers, Josiah said.

Mohamad Ali stressed he did not support teenagers having sex out of wedlock, but said it would be all right if they were married. WHILE the world is reeling from what is possibly the worst global economic crisis since The Great Depression, most Malaysians have been too preoccupied with its own political drama to pay much attention to the financial meltdown. Everyone is busy talking about politics. The opposition taking over, the opposition not taking over; the PM stepping down, the PM not stepping down; who will become the new PM's deputy, who will not; is Anwar guilty of sodomy, is he innocent. Based on the newspaper headlines, many seem to think that it only affects the US, Europe, and other countries in the region. Malaysians tend to think that based on strong commodities and crude oil prices that Petronas is selling, we are somehow insulated from what is happening elsewhere.

Well, if they have been reading reports closely, they would see that palm oil and crude oil prices have plunged also. Local newspapers have not been reporting the meltdown on a big scale. The coverage is still mainly limited to the business or foreign sections, and tend to present the 'official' side of things.

In today's publication of The Star, the biggest English daily, a story on local banks focused on the positives. The lead story of the business section of The Star said that banks were turning cautious but have not put the brakes on lending to businesses.
It also stressed that the country's high savings rate and healthy foreign reserves would enable local banks to weather the global credit squeeze. As a result, perhaps not many Malaysians are even aware of the spreading fear in global markets. This sort of thinking is perhaps further boosted by the country's leaders who kept insisting that Malaysia's economic fundamentals are strong, rather than preparing the ground for what is to come -- slower economic growth, and perhaps job losses.

Second Finance Minister Nor Mohamed Yakcob was quoted in today's papers as saying that Malaysia is unlikely to enter into a recession. He did admit however that "if the crisis creates a recession in the US and Europe, all countries will be affected."
Mass-selling Malay-language Utusan Malaysia played up Nor Mohamed's comments and made it their lead story for the business pages, with the headline saying "Malaysia confident will not fall into recession." Quoting the central bank, the government has said that both direct and indirect exposure of Malaysian financial institutions in terms of holding of securities linked to the US sub-prime mortgages and lending to entities associated with them, accounted for only 0.3 per cent of the banking system's capital base. Further supporting this argument is the fact that the Malaysian bourse also has not plunged to the depths seen by neighbouring Indonesia, which was forced to close for two days this week after huge falls.
But observers cautioned that Malaysians must pay careful attention to events happening elsewhere before they end up being taken by surprise. Some say this time, if the recession lands on Malaysian shores, it might well be worse than the 1997-98 Asian Financial Crisis.
First to go could be Malaysian exports, 20 per cent of which go to the US. A drop in exports could cause major job losses. This would then affect consumer spending and curtail growth.
We are already seeing the prices of commodities fall, particularly fuel and palm oil, two commodities which Malaysia depends on heavily for its earnings. This could result in a vicious bite soon enough unless prices recover. A big chunk of the Malaysian government annual revenue, about 46 per cent, comes from the petroleum funds. So falling oil prices could mean the government might have to crimp on building infrastructure and rural projects, like schools and drainage. Also, many palm oil growers are rural Malays in the government-backed Felda estates. During the Asian financial crisis, the sentiment against the government in the rural areas were negative because many growers found it tough to make ends meet. And job losses jumped as electronics factories closed or pared operations. Already in the papers, some companies have reportedly having difficulty in paying their debts as ringgit is declining while their debt payment is in US dollars. All these means that, like it or not, whether they pay attention to it or not, the global meltdown will soon enough knock on the doors of many Malaysians

Heartstrings’ rating continues to plummet

Is there a sign of hope for this musical drama ?

Heartstrings was much discussed before its debut, from the voting to pick the drama title, to comparison with its drama musical predecessor, Dream High.
But, instead of outperformed Dream High, Heartstrings is far cry fromDream High’s rating achievement.

Dream High started with solid 11% rating and with its interesting character, storyline and well made directing , Dream Highsuccessfully finished strong in 18%. This drama also delivered its teenage star Kim Soo Hyun into famed.

Meanwhile, Heartstrings with already famous young stars, Park Shin Hye from You’re Beautiful and Jung Yong Hwa from Kpop group CNBLUE are struggling in rating business.

This drama started slow at 6.7% and continues to decline , even reached 4.5% for 6th episode.
So what went wrong ?

First, it’s no secret that the TV viewer has substantial amount of ajummas. So, melodrama and makjang will likely get good rating. Opposite with teenage drama, such as Heartstrings and Playful Kiss.
The ajummas seem never liked the teenage romance.
Then, why Dream High which also played by young stars did well ? We think it’s because Dream High has a bit cinderella story on Kim Soo Hyun’s role, Song Sam Dong .

Second, a quite poor directing and a weak story.
Sorry PD-nim, but that’s how we feel. We’re surprised that here inHeartstrings we don’t recognize PD Pyo Min Soo’s greatness which amazed us during Coffee House with fast pace and beautiful unconventional directing.
That situation was exacerbated with weak storyline. The musical competition is so lame and we’re struggling to finish the first episode, duh !

The already struggling drama got another punch when the leading lady Park Shin Hye got a major car accident. She suffered minor injuries -the muscular pain in neck and waist (NOOO !).
But fortunately, the MRI and CT scan give her clearance, thank God !
Park Shin Hye will resume filming again this weekend, but the accident already have an effect on the drama with the absence of episode 8 which should be aired on July 21. A special episode was aired that day to replace.

It’s truly a gloomy moment for the drama team , but hey, it’s still a third from the total series, so keep up the spirit and do your best,Heartstrings ! Hwaiting !

Following ‘drunk driving’ allegation, Uhm Ki Joon might be stepping down from Scent of A Woman

Uhm Ki Joon will be added his name to the long list of Korean celebrity who have accident in the street. Several of them involved in car accident while drunk driving and that might be included Uhm if the allegation is proven.
He follows fellow actor Kwon Sang Woo, actress Kim Ji Soo, and the latest singer Daesung from K-pop Big Bang. Note : Daesung was not drunk driving when his incident happened.

The’s star just had an accident where he hit a taxi waiting for the light. His blood alcohol content looked like quite high at the time during accident and that’s raised drunk driving allegation.
Uhm denied that he drunk and said that he had drunk the day before accident and thought that he was detoxicated enough to drive.

But he still have to pass the blood sample investigation , though. And the result will come in the next 10 to 15 days.

The side effect of the incident is that Uhm Ki Joon may loses his second leading man role in currently airing drama Scent of A Woman.
SBS revealed that they will decide on Uhm Ki Joon’s stepping down from the drama after the blood sample result is out.
It’s not an easy decision for SBS because Uhm got the important second lead role there, they may have to change the story here and there and quickly look for the replacement.

But if it happens, then the most disadvantaged person surely Uhm Ki Joon himself.
When today other dramas are struggling to reach double digit rating,Scent of A Woman posted a whooping 15% rating in its first week, with that achievement the 20-something percent rating is wide open.

Secara tidak sedar, ia menunjukkan sikap kuku besi dan tidak mengendahkan peraturan-peraturan atau undang-undang yang melindungi status seorang yang bergelar pekerja.

Begitulah jahatnya kuasa politik yang cuba memanipulasi Dr. Rosti. Secara logika, si pendesak akan terselamat, sedangkan Dr. Rosti bakal dikambinghitamkan seandainya perkara ini berbangkit kelak. Mujur Dr. Rosti setaraf dengan statusnya sebagai ilmuwan sehingga membawa kepada jawatannya, sebelum notis perletakan jawatan 24 jam itu.

Malaysia bukanlah negara cincai. Terdapat undang-undang buruh, atau undang-undang perhubungan perindustrian yang memberi peluang kepada seseorang pekerja “chance to be heard” sebelum sesuatu tindakan seperti pemecatan boleh dilakukan. Maka prosedur yang selayaknya adalah surat tunjuk sebab dan diikuti dengan siasatan dalaman (domestic inquiry) sebelum tindakan disiplin termasuklah pemecatan jawatan boleh dilaksanakan.

Namun kerakusan politik tidak melihat aspek-aspek itu. Asalkan matlamatnya tercapai, apa pun boleh. Dan pastinya ada agenda tersembunyi di sebalik desakan itu. Tidak mustahil seandainya pihak yang mendesak sudah bersiap sedia untuk meletakkan kroni-kroni mereka sebagai pengganti.

Mungkin 3 pegawai universiti berkenaan tidak sependapat dengan pendesak itu, berikutan “permintaan” yang melangkaui prosedur dan professionalisma pekerjaan mereka. Maka samada si pendesak itu sendiri yang bertindak, atau si pendesak bertindak berikutan kroni-kroni mereka yang memaksa kerana “permintaan” mereka tidak dipenuhi.

Terdapat juga isu lain di Unisel, iaitu laporan polis dari seorang pelajar yang mendakwa telah dirogol oleh tenaga pengajar di universiti berkenaan. Apa status laporan polis berkenaan? Apa tindakan dari pihak universiti? Malangnya si pelajar seandai masih tiada sebarang perkembangan tentang nasibnya yang layak mendapat pembelaan sewajarnya.

Apa sudah jadi dengan Selangor? Pusat anak negeri yang menjadi nadi melahirkan graduan dan generasi masa depan yang berpelajaran semakin menuju kehancuran gara-gara campurtangan politik gampangan.

Pilunya mengenang masa depan anak muda untuk mendapat pendidikan yang sewajarnya diganggu gugat oleh pihak-pihak yang mementingkan agenda peribadi semata-mata melalui kuasa politik.

As the sun goes down across Asia, lights in the office towers remain lit as workers stay glued to their desks well after the normal nine-to-five.

Even at home or worse still - on holiday - it seems the continent's workaholics cannot switch off. This is something the South Korean government is keen to tackle. In an attempt to improve productivity and boost its underdeveloped tourism industry, it is trying to introduce a national standard of a mandatory two-week holiday for employees.

South Koreans are among those working the longest number of hours in the Western world, averaging 2,256 a year compared with 1,647 in the UK or 1,778 in the US, according to the Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development.

But despite being extremely hardworking, their productivity measured among the lowest of the OECD's members.

The average annual leave is currently just 11 days and those days are usually taken as short breaks.

Changing a culture where it is often feared that if you have time for a vacation your services may be viewed as expendable, will take some time, and in some cases extreme tactics.

The Shinhan Financial Group in Seoul has been locking employees out of the work computer systems while they are on leave to ensure they stay out of the office, a manager at the branch told the Globe and Mail. last month.

Demanding employers

And it's not just South Korea that is finding it difficult to entice their workers to take leave.

A recent survey revealed that 69% of Singaporeans and 77% of Hong Kong employees tune into work out of office hours and even on holiday, higher than the regional average of 66%. "The other result that came through in the survey was the correlation between employee connectivity to work and the expectation of employers," says Tim Hird of the recruitment company Robert Half who commissioned the survey.

"So although people from Singapore and Hong Kong were regularly connected to work during their vacation time - over 90% of employers expected their employees to be available and connected during their holiday period."

In comparison, only 6% of employers in New Zealand expect their staff to be available out of office hours.

The average Singaporean gets 25 days leave a year. But most don't take it.

Stefanie Yuen Thio is a partner in a high-profile Singapore law firm and is an ardent believer in working on holiday.

"I never travel without both my mobile phones, my iPad and my laptop, and the first thing I do when I check into a hotel before I check out the toilet and the sheets is to make sure that the wi-fi connection is working and that I can get into my emails."

Around 25% of the 1600 executives polled across Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand confessed that they found it impossible to switch off on holiday.

Sixty six percent believed they should be available in case of an emergency, while 60% said filtering through work emails while they're away is a way to ensure less stress when returning to the office.

Business and pleasure

Advances in technology have made all this possible. Most business travellers would argue that wi-fi at hotels is more important than the obligatory turn down service. And so more and more hotels are recognizing this as an opportunity.The Intercontinental Hotel group has introduced the use of free iPads for their executive guests, seizing on the fact that most people these days mix business with pleasure.

"We've found it's a really good service and we're going to have to buy some more because they are in demand," says general manager of the Intercontinental Bali Resort, Phil Riley.

Almost every second person who is pool-side at this beach resort is busy tapping away at their mobile phone or hand-held device.

"I work in the accounting field and every day I receive about 30-50 emails," Laurencia reveals. "So if I'm on holiday and don't check and stay connected to my email, when I get back to work it's going to be like tonnes of emails so it's really important for me to stay connected while I'm on holiday.

"I'm not only looking for wi-fi that's inside the building but also outside so then I can relax and enjoy the scenery while I'm still working."

The phenomenon of a 24/7 workplace has led to hyper-connectivity and faster turnaround times, which is of course great for business in a competitive world. But what does this say about the work-life balance in Asia?

"A practical tip, if you do want to stay connected with work, allocate some time at the end of the day or at the beginning of the day so you can catch up on your emails and then you can enjoy the rest of the day with your friends and family while on vacation," says Tim Hird.

As compensation for being available while on leave, employees are most commonly offered time off in lieu or overtime payment.

However, roughly 40% of workers are not compensated at all.

So for many, it doesn't even pay to work on holiday.

Thai PM-elect denies Thaksin picking cabinet

BANGKOK: On the eve of becoming Thailand's first female premier, Yingluck Shinawatra denied reports on Thursday that her brother Thaksin would be making government appointments.

Yingluck, who has been described as Thaksin's "clone", rejected suggestions from Thai media that the ousted former leader is involved in allocating cabinet posts.

"Cabinet selection is being worked out here in Thailand and Thaksin and other members of the family have no involvement," said Yingluck, who is set to be voted in as premier by lawmakers on Friday.

Thaksin was removed from power in a 2006 military coup and lives abroad to avoid a jail term for corruption. But he remains influential and several local newspapers have reported that he will hand-pick the new government line-up.

Political novice Yingluck was transformed from a relatively unknown businesswoman to elected leader in a matter of weeks on the back of her fugitive brother's popularity.

However, since her Puea Thai party won a thumping majority in the July 3 election, she has sought to proclaim a level of independence from Thaksin.

The Democrat Party of outgoing prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has lodged an as yet unresolved complaint against Puea Thai, alleging that banned politicians were involved in its campaign over its slogan "Thaksin thinks, Puea Thai does".

Also on Thursday, Puea Thai said Yingluck's candidacy for prime minister had unanimous approval from party members.

The parliamentary vote on Friday is expected to be a formality as Yingluck's party and its coalition partners control three fifths of the lower house, after which she will need to wait for official royal endorsement.

Thailand's 28th prime minister faces the challenge of bringing stability to the kingdom, which has been politically turbulent in the five years since Thaksin's ouster.

Other Thaksin allies have been removed from power by the courts following the coup and the country has seen damaging pro- and anti- Thaksin street protests.

They culminated in mass demonstrations by his "Red Shirt" followers in Bangkok last year, which ended with a military assault and more than 90 people dead. Thaksin is wanted on terrorism charges linked to the unrest.

Global markets plunge on recession fears

NEW YORK: Stock markets worldwide plunged on Thursday amid fears of a new global economic downturn, with Wall Street suffering its worst day since the financial crisis.

Mounting worries over the eurozone debt crisis and a new batch of weak economic data from the United States did a one-two punch to hammer investor confidence, shaking investors on both sides of the Atlantic.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 4.3 per cent, or 512.76 points -- its worst one-day drop since December 2008 -- to close at 11,383.68, erasing all of its gains so far this year.

The broader S&P 500 dropped 4.8 per cent to end the day at 1,200.07, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite dived 5.1 per cent to 2,556.39.

London's benchmark FTSE 100 index fell 3.43 per cent, retreating to levels last seen in September 2010; in Frankfurt the DAX fell 3.40 per cent, and France's CAC 40 dropped 3.90 per cent.

In Brazil, the Sao Paulo Stock Exchange lost 5.72 per cent, while Mexico's Bolsa lost 3.4 per cent.

"We're seeing the erosion and now the loss of confidence, confidence in the economy, confidence in the market, confidence in the policy makers. It's all showing up," said Hugh Johnson, of Hugh Johnson Advisors.

"There is a deep concern about global growth and of the state of play in the United States in particular," said City Index analyst Giles Watts.

"Traders are growing increasingly concerned about a sharp slowdown in US economic activity in the third quarter."

In Europe, investor sentiment remains plagued by worries that debt-laden Italy and Spain could be engulfed by the fast-moving eurozone debt crisis.

The European Central Bank announced Thursday that it would resume emergency credit-easing measures, some of which were last enacted at the height of the global financial crisis.

But the ECB's efforts still failed to restore confidence. The risk premium investors demand to buy Spanish 10-year bonds over safe-bet German debt shot back up to near a record high on Thursday.

The eurozone debt crisis has put Italy and Spain under huge pressure in recent weeks after Greece, Ireland and Portugal had to be bailed out by the European Union and the International Monetary Fund.

In the United States, data continued to point to a very weak economy, with some analysts citing fears of a new recession.

The US Labor Department reported Thursday that weekly claims for unemployment benefits remained at a high 400,000 last week.

"Stocks have retreated deeper into the red to set a new 2011 low. The bleeding continues to be broad-based," said Briefing.com.

"European banking stocks are under pressure as contagion fears work their way into Italy, the third largest economy in the eurozone."

Gold scored a new record at $1,681.72 per ounce on the spot market in New York as investors flocked to the precious metal, regarded as a safe bet in times of economic turmoil. It later retreated to $1,647.57.

Prices for US government bonds, another safe haven, also rose. The yield on the 10-year Treasury dropped to 2.46 per cent from 2.60 per cent late Wednesday, while that on the 30-year bond fell to 3.72 per cent from 3.87 per cent. (Bond prices and yields move in opposite directions.)

Oil prices in New York and London both fell more than five per cent amid fears that a slowdown could take a deep bite out of global energy demand.

"The fear of a double dip recession with the slowdown in the US and the sovereign debt situation in Europe is having everybody biting their nails," said Adam Sieminski, chief energy economist of Deutsche Bank.

On forex markets, the dollar surged against other major currencies, helped by Japanese and Swiss government interventions to press their own currencies back down after the recent jump in risk-aversion.

But by the end of the day, the Swiss franc -- the favorite safe-haven of recent months -- ended higher against the greenback: at 2100 GMT, one dollar bought 0.7666 francs, compared to 0.7692 late Wednesday.

The euro fell more than two per cent to 1.0818 francs from 1.1019.

But the dollar was up against the euro, which brought $1.4106 (from $1.4318) and the yen, 78.93 yen (from 76.97).

The pound also lost ground to the greenback, to $1.6266 (from $1.6422).

California’s attorney general calls for gay marriages to resume

California’s attorney general has asked a federal appeals court to allow gay marriages to take place while the state’s supreme court decides on the validity of the ban on same sex marriage.

Attorney general Kamala Harris has joined lawyers for two gay couples and the city of San Francisco in resuming gay marriages. Gay marriages were banned in 2008 following a voter initiated ballot, Proposition 8.

Prop 8 was overturned by Judge Vaughn Walker in August, who ruled that the ban on gay marriage in California was wrong. The decision came after a lengthy “trial” of the arguments for and against allowing gay couples to marry. “The evidence presented at trial and the position of the representatives of the State of California show that an injunction against enforcement of Proposition 8 is in the public’s interest,” Judge Walker wrote at the time. He initially ordered for gay marriages to resume in the state with almost immediate effect.

Unusually, the official ‘defendants’ of that appeal, then governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Attorney-General Jerry Brown, refused to defend the ban. So, the groups who supported the introduction of Prop 8 have been arguing that they have the right to defend the ban on marriage.

Today, Ms Harris argued that maintaining the ban before the judgement is discriminatory: “The public interest weighs heavily against the government sanctioning such discrimination by permitting it to continue.” The attorney general added: “Events have demonstrated that if the stay ever was justified, it is no longer.”

Silvio Berlusconi says Italy banks 'solid and solvent'

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has said the country will not be drawn into the debt crisis engulfing Europe.

Addressing Parliament on Wednesday, he said Italy's banks are "solid and solvent" and the economy was "solid".

His comments come after heavy losses on the Milan stock market and a sharp rise in yields on Italian bonds.

The eurozone's third largest economy is about to introduce a 43bn-euro ($62bn; £38bn) austerity package.

Mr Berlusconi said Italy "has solid economic foundations" and called the recent fall in bond yields a "crisis of faith in the international markets".

Italy has so far managed to avoid sovereign debt problems, despite having one of the highest debt-to-GDP ratios in the eurozone at 120%.

But the economy is twice as big as Greece, Portugal and the Irish Republic combined, so a bailout would probably be unaffordable.
'Deep concern'

Mr Berlusconi has been criticised for his silence on Italy's economic problems, amid concerns about whether the government will introduce the full austerity package.

Earlier in the day, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso described the bond markets' treatment of Italy and Spain as "a cause of deep concern".

Yields on Spanish and Italian bonds have hit euro-era records this week, meaning that it would cost both countries' governments more to borrow money if they wanted to.

The Italian 10-year bond was yielding 6.02%, while the Spanish 10-year bond was at 6.14%.

A bond yield above 6% is considered unsustainable in the long run.

"The upward march in Spanish and Italian bond yields is evidence of the relentlessness of the sovereign debt crisis," said Jane Foley, an analyst at Rabobank International.
